Mike Lazaridis established Research in Motion, makers of the Blackberry wireless device. He is a member of the Order of Canada and used $100 million of personal funds to found the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Ontario.
Lazaridis spent his 1979 school year making buzzers in shop class and selling them to all the Windsor-area teams practicing Reach for the Top. Apparently this little business venture covered his university tuition.
