North Hollywood High School, also commonly known as NoHo, is a public high school located in its namesake neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. North Hollywood's Quiz Bowl team is student run, and has recently become reactivated in the 2025-2026 season, participating in local competitions and qualifying for the NAQT HSNCT and PACE NSC in 2026. Nolan Dannels, an alumni of North Hollywood, acts as the unofficial adviser and coach of the team. Additionally, North Hollywood is one of the few active teams in the greater Los Angeles area. North Hollywood is the only school in the Los Angeles Unified School District to host a Highly Gifted Magnet (HGM) program, a program restricted to students who test at least in the 99.9th percentile on an intellectual giftedness assessment conducted by an LAUSD psychologist (equivalent to IQ of 150+/-5). Because of this, the school offers many high level courses and features many strong students in both Quiz Bowl and Science Bowl.
Science Bowl
North Hollywood has a strong science bowl team, consistently placing high in National Science Bowl competitions each year. The team is coached and run by Altair Maine, a science teacher in the HGM program. They are known to have both their A and B teams face off against each other in the annual regional science bowl competitions.

Altair Maine
Coach Altair Maine did not attend the eighth grade or high school himself and has few regrets about this, but missing the opportunity to compete in Science Bowl is one of the few. A Caltech alumni, he has taught physics, chemistry, mathematics, astronomy, and geology since 2000, and has coached both Science Bowl and Science Olympiad since 2007. You are likely at any given point during the National Science Bowl to find him playing ultimate frisbee out on the field, and he is also an avid hiker. Coach Maine gives his Science Bowl team some serious competition in buzzing practice, but cannot pretend to rival them in biography memes.
