A team or player is said to punt a category or categories if they strategically choose not to study it so they can perform better on the remainder of the distribution. This is almost always employed to avoid studying subjects considered more technical or boring, such as auditory fine arts or science.
The term is an adaptation of the standard English meaning of punt as "to retreat from one's objective"[1] and shares a sense of "doing something seemingly bad in the hopes of obtaining a tactical advantage" with the standard context of punting the ball in football on the fourth down.
