Standard names

To avoid confusion, let's list decisions on school names here:

  • Loudoun County High School should always be listed as Loudoun County. There is no school just called "Loudoun High School" and listing Loudoun County that way causes confusion with Loudoun Valley High School.
  • The schools now known as Meridian, Unity Reed, Staunton, and Alexandria City should be listed under those names at all times, even when referring to years when they were called George Mason, Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and T.C. Williams. Any other schools that change their names and ultimately appear in this page should also be referred to by current names only.
  • "Maggie Walker" is the preferred name for referring to the magnet school in Richmond regardless of time period, as opposed to "Governor's School" or "Thomas Jefferson-Richmond."
  • Rappahannock County High School may be abbreviated as Rappahannock Co. to avoid making tables unwieldy, but must not be referred to as just Rappahannock since there is an actual Rappahannock High School in Richmond County.
  • Thomas Jefferson refers to the school in Alexandria, Salem refers to the school in Salem, Heritage refers to the school in Lynchburg, and George Wythe refers to the school in Wytheville. If any of the same-named schools in other cities ultimately are mentioned on this page, then the preferred distinguishing nomenclature is Thomas Jefferson-Alexandria, Thomas Jefferson-Richmond, Salem-Salem, Salem-Virginia Beach, Heritage-Lynchburg, Heritage-Leesburg, Heritage-Newport News, George Wythe-Wytheville, and George Wythe-Richmond. This can be put off until such time as distinguishing any of the same-named schools is actually needed. Matt Weiner (talk) 13:45, 21 October 2021 (CDT)
