ACF Southeast Regionals 2003: full results, stats, gratitude

ACF Southeast Regionals 2003 was held at UTC on Feb. 15.
Congratulations again to Florida for their skin-of-the-teeth victory
in a very competitive tournament.

Full details follow, but first there are some people to thank,
starting with UTC's stats goddess Dorothy Morisch (see previous
post.) Thanks also go, of course, to Subash Maddipoti for the
Herculean task of editing ACF Regionals. We were blessed with a fine
crew of experienced moderators: Stephen Taylor, Mark Dawson, Keith
Hudson, Scotti Whitmire, Markus Iturriaga, and Jim Dendy (welcome
back, Jim!) Dren Rollins, Toby Walter, and Jason Paik also joined
the crew for parts of the day. Thanks also to the many players from
bye teams who volunteered to read or keep score, thus letting our
moderators take turns playing on an exhibition team for the first
eight rounds. And even more thanks than usual go to John Miles and
the staff at Provino's, who for the third time in the past 5 years
kept the kitchen open longer just to accommodate us.

Now to those results...

TEAM RESULTS

The field was divided into two brackets, each of which had eight
eligible teams plus one exhibition team. For stats purposes we did
not count the exhibition matches, but we did track individual stats
for the exhibition teams' players just for the fun of it.

We had a nine-round round robin followed by three rounds of
cross-bracket matches determined by modified Swiss pairings; however,
the early departure of two teams after round 9 made us reshuffle the
lower seeded matches a bit. Here were team results after round 9,
which determined seeding for the modified Swiss section:

Team Name Division Win Loss Points Opp Pts Diff/GM
Vanderbilt Badminton 7 0 1910 690 174.29
Indiana Badminton 6 1 1755 665 155.71
Emory A Badminton 5 2 2115 575 220.00
Georgia Tech B Badminton 4 3 865 1050 -26.43

North Florida Badminton 2 5 485 1155 -95.71

After Round 12, team standings looked like this:

Team Name Division Win Loss Points Opp Pts Diff/GM
Vanderbilt 10 0 2625 1195 143.00
Florida 9 1 3685 820 286.50

Georgia Tech A 6 4 1390 1655 -26.50
Georgia Tech B 5 5 1215 1660 -44.50
Kentucky 4 6 1200 1575 -37.50
Emory C 4 6 1230 1835 -60.50
North Florida 3 7 700 1575 -87.50
South Carolina B 3 7 520 1635 -111.50
Tennessee 2 5 360 1425 -152.14
UTC A 2 8 435 1770 -133.50
Berry 1 6 285 1560 -182.14
UTC B 0 10 245 2125 -188.00
(I'd like to add in UTC B's defense that they were initially
given a win, which was overturned on a protest upheld by... their own
coach.)

As announced at the beginning of the tournament, the top 4 teams by
record would advance to playoffs, with a play-in in the event of a
tie for 4th (which of course we had.) Playoff results were as
follows:

Shootout for 4th playoff berth:
    South Carolina A 75, Emory A 70
Semifinals:
    Florida 310, Indiana 110
    Vanderbilt 295, South Carolina A 85
Finals:
    Florida 245, Vanderbilt 230
    Florida 75, Vanderbilt 65 (shootout)

When a tournament literally is decided on the last tossup of the last
round, you know it was a close one. Hats off to all the playoff
teams for a fine showing.

INDIVIDUAL HONORS AND STATS
All-Star awards went to the top five scorers, not counting those from
exhibition teams. The MVP for ACF SE Regionals 2003 was, ironically,
a player who was planning to attend a different region till the 11th
hour. Bad weather forced Indiana's Wesley Mathews to change his
plans and come south instead, where as a one-man team he earned a
remarkable 3rd place finish at top scorer honors with 98 points per
game. Even that high a score barely won, as Florida's Raj Dhuwalia
finished #2 with 92.5 PPG. Other All-Stars were Vernon Davenport of
South Carolina A, Robert Trent of Vanderbilt, and Jonathan (last name
not supplied) of Georgia Tech B. Condolences to Emory, which just
missed the hardware as its three teams provided scorers #6 through
#10.

We also tracked "bragging rights," where a given tossup is answered
by only one person at the tournament. Vanderbilt's Robert Trent had
two (Pierre Menard and George Gissing); one each went to Vandy's Matt
Keller (Dead Christ), South Carlina A's Vernon Davenport (Malenkov),
Indiana's Wesley Mathews (The House of Bernanda Alba), and Emory B's
J.T. Fetter (battle of Plataea).

It should also be noted that only one tossup went unanswered in all
rooms (the Puranas.) It's a tribute to the editing job Subash did on
the tossups that we had only one bagel for the day.
