Hi Lee,

It's odd that your school requires you to have a sponsor go along on
all of your trips with you... is that for all trips, or just if you're
in a university vehicle, or just if it's out of state, or ... ?

Also, does your sponsor have to be a faculty member? Our advisor at
Iowa State is staff, not faculty, and that's no problem here. It
might be easier to try that.

Basically-- we decide what we want to do. If we want to go to a
tournament, the interested players do the work (reserve the hotel
rooms, find a driver, and such). The club officers oversee this to a
point, especially early in the year and for larger tournaments. The
President and Treasurer need to sign vouchers (as does our advisor,
who frankly doesn't have to do much else) to reimburse for expenses,
and that's about all.

All of the members are responsible for doing fund raising. We hosted
four tournaments this past year (two collegiate, one high school, one
intramural), and people who wanted the benefit of that club money
helped out with tournament organization, question writing, and
moderating/scorekeeping. That money, then, paid our way to
tournaments.

What might be the best source of information for you is talking to
other student organizations at your school, and seeing how they manage
to jump through all of the administration's hoops. They might have
the best insights for you.

I certainly hope this isn't the end for your team... if I can give you
any more information or help you out, just drop me a line.
