All I have to say in response to this post is BRAVO! I am so happy about this announcement for two reasons. First, as a rising Junior and President of my club (Penn), I was kind of dreading the fact that I would have very few tournaments left to play in. It's kind of ironic and not ideal if you ask me that most Presidents of quiz bowl teams get fewer opportunities to play than their novices, especially in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. So I'm very happy not only that I can now play in this tournament, but also because I don't have to send my new players up to Boston by themselves. It might sound silly, but somebody has to organize trips logistically and placing that burden on a freshman or a sophomore without a position is unnecessary if you ask me. So Dan, I will e-mail you personally about how many teams we're going to send to your tournament. We're also definitely interested in attending a TRASH junior bird at some point. However, I wanted to take this opportunity not only to thank Dan and congratulate him, but also to make an appeal to other tournament directors. The state of college quiz bowl is good, but something still needs to be done about making competition fun at all levels. I think this has been pretty successful for freshmen and sophomores with the dramatic expansion of junior bird tournaments. However, in order to keep it accessible for all undergrads, which should be a priority in my opinion, I would ask the TD's of other junior birds to consider making their tournaments CUT-style as well. Namely, SNEWT and Baby Hen which are in my region, because otherwise, all the tournaments that the non-frosh and sophs will be attending this fall will be out of our actual region. I hope other people will chime in with their thoughts on my post. I really think having more CUT-style tournaments or undergrad only tournaments is really going to help quiz bowl in the long run. While grad student participation is inevitable and perhaps beneficial, I still think and insist that this should be an activity primarily for college students and run by college students.
