Re: A Great Time to be a SocStu Teacher!

I have to agree with Craig. This was just cool.
>From waiting for twenty minutes at a community center
after work to vote with kids playing in near-darkness
to staying up until 2:30 to see results, track
things on the web, and exchange good-spirited barbs and
cheers with friends on both sides of the political
spectrum, I had a ball.

I remember seeing TV
coverage of Tiananmen, Panama, the '88 election and
debates and the Berlin Wall. I still remember listening
to Bush give his speech the day that the Gulf War
started (I was in English class). In retrospect, those
events - both the power of the Wall falling and the
violence in Tiananmen - inspired me to pursue an
internationalist career.

Say that it's a pointless
election. Say that there wasn't a real choice. I guarantee
you that at least a few kids who weren't interested
before got caught up in Nader v Bush v Gore and the
electoral college fight - and because they did, the US and
the world will be a little better as a result. Hooah.
