Re: CBI Reg 15 stuff...

I am not trying to be a CBI apologist. However,
some of the ways they do things are
understandable.

On staffing, the minimum they require is three: a
moderator, a judge, and scorekeeper. Two of these the
circuit can agree are ideal, the moderator and
scorekeeper. And the judge is a good idea in principle if you
have the staff.

Here's the deal. ACUI wants the
staff to be mostly institutional-type people. I think
that is part of the reason they insist on
institutional reps, to ensure a pool of volunteers. I can
understand their desire to not have NAQT people there since
that is a potential competitor. And not having
students of competing schools staff is also an acceptable
idea to me. As for to the number of staff, it is quite
obvious from asking that most volunteers either don't
want to moderate (or een judge) or feel incapable of
the task. Honestly, I don't blame them. If you want
to increase the number of moderators available,
teams should try and make sure that your eventual
institutional rep staffs your IM tournament and gets experience
as a moderator. Invite them to any HS or college
invitationals you may host. They may not accept, but throw them
a bone. Also, we youngin's can take these schedules
easily. You know what? The ACU-I people, who may be in
their mid-thirties or older, can't. And there's nothing
wrong with that. We may be so used to pulling
all-nighters that we forget that most people in the real world
sleep. Now, if it's a matter of the Regional Coordinator
turning away qualified moderators, that's something you
should probably contact College Bowl directly about. Of
course, if people are saying "I want to moderate" without
giving any qualifications, it's their
fault.

Anyways, I get the idea that most of these people
genuinely care about College Bowl Regionals and want to put
on the best tournament possible. They feel very
proud about what they do, and the worst way to approach
them about possible changes is to sound like an
egotistical jackass talking down to children, while acting
like a zealot for the one true quizbowl. From what I
gather, people have done this on occasion, causing bad
relations.
