The original
Rutgers New Jersey Bowl aired on New Jersey Network (PBS)
until 1990 (I think). It was a "classic" quiz
bowl-style format - four-person teams, TUs and bonuses, plus
audio and visual questions.
Schools could
participate in Rutgers New Jersey Bowl every three years. My
school, Pope John XXIII, competed in 1985 and 1988. We
were supposed to compete in 1991 (when I was there,
natch), but Rutgers pulled all funding the year before
and cancelled the show.
I've heard about
Rutgers Academic Challenge (Rutgers asked me to help out
with the format during the pre-pilot stages, but I
declined as I was moving to PA) - is it as bizarre as Mr.
Hayes describes?
