USF Novice (Illinois mirror)

Quick look: Valencia Community College A won the
2001 Novice Invitational at USF (Illinois mirror). Top
scorers were Kevin Bush (FAU) at 66.43 PPG, Jay Sulzmann
(Rhodes College) 47.14 PPG, Nap (USF) 45.0 PPG, and James
(VCC), Hugo (USF-hybrid), and Irena (UF-C) tied at 40
PPG.

It seems that no one liked my kooky playoff scheme.
I tried to run it as I have seen volleyball
tournaments run in the past. That is, the round robin play
results were used as seedings for playoff "flights" with
teams of the same caliber. What people didn't like was
that the flights were single elimination, but they
kept on playing consolation games after they were
eliminated.

See, I would feel the opposite way. I'd
rather keep playing, even if I'm not in contention for
the title because I'm a novice, and I'd like to play
in as many rounds as possible. Some folks did not
concur, and bailed out early.

The trick of this
tournament was trying to get enough games in before people
had to leave (understandably, UF wanted to get back
in time for the UF-FSU football game).

But
it's still not very fair, I suppose, for the teams
that ended up missing some games because of this. I
guess the only fair thing to do in the future is to
schedule it on a day that does not coincide with football
for anyone (and that's tough to do).
