R. Robert Hentzel is the chief technical officer of NAQT. He was its president from 1998 until 2019 and its chief editor from 2002 until 2014. He is an alumnus of Iowa State University. His playing career also includes a number of appearances in west coast tournaments, playing on masters teams. At some point in his extensive career he seems to have won a tournament playing solo. Other notable playing achievements include winning the 2000 and 2002 Chicago Open and being considered among the best players ever. He also won the 2006 Carper Award and the 2010 Benjamin Cooper Academic Ambassador Award. Hentzel is involved with the Minnesota quizbowl circuit and runs many tournaments in the area.
