Certamen
Certamen (Latin for "contest") is a quiz bowl-like activity organized by the National Junior Classical League. It features one line pyramidal tossups on topics drawn from Greek and Roman classics.
While at Yale Michael Kearney helped organize the Yale Certamen tournament, as well as the competition for Agon, which focuses exclusively on Greece. As someone very involved in both activities, Michael has helped bring over concepts from quiz bowl like advanced stats, a higher standard of quality, and an emphasis of fair tournament formats.
Format
The game consists of 20 one- or two-sentence speedchecks read to both teams; answering one correctly awards a team two paired bonuses on the same subject. Common subjects for questions include Roman mythology, literature, and history, as well as Latin vocabulary, grammar, and translation. Some questions incorporate multiple-choice asking players to e.g. select which term from a list fits a definition or has a common etymology.
