North Carolina (state)
North Carolina is a state in the Southeastern United States. It has numerous quiz bowl teams at the high school, college, and middle college levels. There are both pyramidal and non-pyramidal tournaments in North Carolina.
Tournaments
There are many tournaments hosted yearly in North Carolina.
Some examples include:
- Western North Carolina Shootout
- Other NCASA regional and league tournaments
Fewer tournaments than usual were hosted by North Carolina teams during the 2020-2021 high school quiz bowl season.
NASAT
A team from North Carolina attended NASAT in 2018; they finished in 15th place. A North Carolina team also attended NASAT in 2012, when they finished in 7th place. There was discussion of a North Carolina team attending the 2020 NASAT before it was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic. North Carolina attended the 2021 NASAT, where they placed 13th.
Pyramidal
Pyramidal quiz bowl in North Carolina includes many tournaments run by NCASA, as well as independent tournaments and local leagues. The following groups and organizations lead pyramidal tournaments in North Carolina:
- NCASA, but only its quiz bowl competition and not its Mastermind TV show (probably, if it ever actually happens) nor Twelve, a competition that seems vaguely similar to Academic Decathlon
- Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools, which often sponsors some form of a quiz bowl tournament or league
- Many teams host their own tournaments, including Raleigh Charter and UNC
- Isothermal Community College often hosts a tournament for Western North Carolina
- The Catawba Valley quiz bowl league, which may or may not be affiliated with NCASA
- History Bowl tournaments are also pyramidal
Non-pyramidal
The WRAL Brain Game competition in the North Carolina Triangle area, although some teams also come from further east in North Carolina, is on TV and does not adhere to the standards of pyramidal quiz bowl.
A High-IQ Bowl competition formerly existed in the Greensboro area.
Some form of non-pyramidal league exists in the Winston-Salem area.
NC teams have competed in Beta Club quiz bowl and have been invited to the NAC.
History Bowl
2 History Bowl tournaments take place most years in North Carolina. One, the NC State Championship, has recently been hosted by East Chapel Hill. The other, the Piedmont History Bowl, is hosted in the Charlotte area.
