The Sam Houston State University Academic Challenge was the de facto Texas state championship before the TQBA State Championship. All records seem to indicate that the program folded in 2011. The Academic challenge was created in 1992 and was inspired by the Texaco Academic Challenge (now known as the National Academic Championship. During its entire run the Academic Challenge was hosted and organized by Sam Houston State faculty members. In later years the program was coordinated by Mitzi L. Mahoney, Associate Professor with the Sam Houston State Department of Political Science.
