Outline NAQT ICT selection process (1)

Division I:

STAGE 1: For approximately the
first 90% of invitations (this year, with a 36-team
field, this is the first 32 invitations):

1. All
SCT winners, undergraduate champions, and SCT hosts
get an automatic invitation. (Hosts may choose to use
their automatic invitation in either Division I or
Division II. Separate qualification by a host of a
Division II team will not affect using the automatic for
Division I. Separate qualification by a host of a Division
I team, however, dissolves the automatic invitation
-- a host that also qualifies a Division I team
through SCT performance may not use their guarantee to
enter an additional team in the tournament, in either
division.)

2. The remaining Division I teams from the SCTs are
ranked according to their SCT performance by a
statistical method based on tossup points scored per tossup
heard, adjusted for strength of schedule; bonus
conversion; and a small adjustment based on won-loss record.
The balance of the first 90% of invitations are
issued based strictly upon this ranking.

STAGE 2:
Additional invitations (and waitlist order) are now issued
in the following order of priority, with NAQT to
determine any additional tiebreaking procedure that ever
becomes necessary:

(3. Honoring of any special
commitments made regarding invitations to winners of special
events or two teams from Britain or elsewhere, if any.)
[Two spots--33 and 34 in the Division I field this
year--are being offered to British teams based upon results
of the British NAQT championships.]
4. Overall
champions at an IFT who were unable to attend an SCT
because none were held within 450 miles of their
school.
5. Undergraduate champions at an IFT who were unable
to attend an SCT because none were held within 450
miles of their school.
6. Overall champions at an
IFT who have not already been invited, whether or not
they attended an SCT.
7. Undergraduate champions at
an IFT who have not already been invited, whether or
not they attended an SCT.
8. Overall 2nd-place
teams at an IFT who were unable to attend an SCT
because none were held within 450 miles of their
school.

(Invitations due to the criteria above will be issued
automatically by NAQT so long as places in the field remain
unfilled. Invitations due to criteria #9 below, which will
be applied only to a team that attended neither an
SCT nor an ICF due to our having failed to locate
either tournament within 450 miles of them, will be
issued only if such a team takes the step of informing
us of their interest in attending the
ICT.)

9. Winners of any intercollegiate academic quiz
tournament held in the current academic competition season
that was open either to any enrolled student or to any
enrolled undergraduate student, and that involved at least
nine teams from at least five different schools.
