Re: Tips for a new club...?

I maybe one of only a few players who are in my
position...I was a middling - average player when I was at
Vanderbilt in the mid-late nineties (My claim to fame is
winning the Washignton U tournament on a three person
team consisting of myself, Steve Schroeder, and
Darrell in which I got exactly 4 tossups the whole
tournament, heh) and we were fully involved in the circuit,
ACF, NAQT, etc and the experience was mighty
enjoyable, I must say..
Now however Ive transfered to a
once a year CBI only college, University of
Houston...And despite my efforts to change things and get them
to start at least trying out a few other
tournaments, our University Union coordinator doesnt seem all
that impressed..For one, the IMs just dont bring out
enough people to create a dedicated team, and two it
seemed a shock to him that there was a "circuit" as I
described it to him...I dont know if its just wanting to
retain the status quo or go the easy route or what, but
I dont see him deaffilating, and we dont have
enough money to do CBI and even a few
invitationals..
SO whats the point, I dont know...but I found CBI
not to bad this past weekend (in fact we would have
made the playoffs if we hadnt brain farted a few times
in a close game with UT, then been highly upset to
be Lousiana Tech's only win), I had a great time,
and it was good just to be playing again, but I am
sure alot of schools are in our position or similar,
where CBI is the only choice not from ignorance of
alternatives, but because of other factors..The only complaints
I really had were FAR too many byes (6 I think),
and some of the moderators..But I could tell that
with alot of other once a year teams in our region,
most of them didnt care, and only cared about the
enjoyment of the weekend, sure they tryed to be
competitive, but even if they werent, they didnt mind...This
is where I think CBIs niche is, they put on an
enjoyable tournament for these kinds of teams and a good
time is usually had by all...And without CBI, alot of
schools and people would loose out I think...Maybe its
should be renamed Quiz-Bowl light, heh..
Anyway,
thoughts?, suggestions for changing my coordinators mind?..I
get the impression he is friendly with some of the
top teams in our part of the country (UT, Texas A&M,
Oklahoma) that do go on the circuit..well thanks for
