Re: Tips for a new club...?

Dave -- I wish I had gotten a chance to talk to
you at regionals this past weekend, but y'all were
obviously in the other bracket. I wouldn't say Arkansas is
a great program, but we are fairly active and
generally do pretty well whenever someone with the last
name Wehrman is involved. Granted we had some help
from their parents, but basically we built our program
totally outside the control of our union. Our rep_s_
which change every year, have no interest whatsoever in
anything beyond CBI and very little in that... the year we
got second at CBI nationals, they almost canceled the
trip because only three people could go. So anyway,
there is no need to have a person in the union to help
you, necessarily. You can create a student club or RSO
or whatever they call it and, in most cases, appeal
directly to the student government for funds. You probably
won't get much, but if you have enough for one tourney
and some pizza to attract people to your first few
meetings you can get started. After that, the best way to
get some more money is to run a high school
tournament. You can do this through NAQT (with them obviously
sharing the profits) or you can write the questions
yourself, if you have the people/time. I know I am
rambling, but my main point is that it is possible to build
a resonably good, traveling club without much
school support.
