Karsten Rynearson (HS Class of 2022) was the captain of Phillips Academy in Massachusetts. He played middle school and freshman year at Greens Farms Academy in Connecticut. His career highlights include winning 2022 IPNCT.
Career
Middle school
Karsten led his team to 5th at the 2018 MSNCT and was the second-highest-scoring All-Star for the tournament. He soloed his way to third at the 2018 USABB Academic Bowl, was second in the Bee, and won the National Humanities Bee. He was second overall in the Middle School division at the 2018 IHO and finished the year with winning a slot on the National Quizbowl Awards Middle School Team of the Year.
High school
In his freshman year, Karsten was the top scorer at and won Yale Fall Academic Tournament. While playing solo, he missed upper bracket at PHSAT after a circle of death but was the top scorer and cleared the consolation bracket to place 9th. He also soloed at Columbia Fall, where he earned top scorer status and finished 5th. He led his team to 4th/5th place at Harvard Fall Tournament and BHSAT respectively, beating powerhouses like Lexington, Great Neck South, and Millburn on the way. He was the top All-Star at the 2019 SSNCT and led Greens Farms to a fifth place finish. After switching schools and going to Phillips Academy in Massachusetts, he helped win the 2019 PAQT and led PA to 8th at EFT at MIT, getting first at literature, third at history, and third overall individually.
