Nathan James was the president of the Furman Academic Competitions Team.

Quizbowl career

High school

James attended Wando from 2005-2006. The 2006 season was noted for a close loss to James Island in the county circuit. The team only played county circuit tournaments in part due to a chaotic coaching situation where several different people tried to run the team.

College

James struggled at his first tournament, the the 2006 COTKU Open at UTC. He played better at 2007 Sword Bowl, winning the Division II scoring title. A highly sleep-deprived James finished second in scoring at the 2008 SE Invitational at Berry.

James' first mainstream circuit tournament was 2008 TIT at Georgia. He was initially awarded the third-place scoring title but reported a stats error that ultimately awarded him the first-place title. At 2008 ACF Regionals at Vanderbilt, James finished fourth in scoring.

He then quit to focus on Scrabble. He did not play or practice during the 2009 regular season, and there was no team. He came out of retirement to attend the 2009 VCU Open (with Lily Chen, York Chen and Zihan Zheng) and CaTo/TaCo (with York, Zihan and Carsten Gehring). He plans to resume competition with a reconstituted Furman team in the 2010 season.

Etc.

James has been a tournament Scrabble player since 2004. Results here: [1]

James often uses the name "Marchbanks" in Internet quizbowl contexts, a reference to the G. B. Shaw play Candida.
