The Categorical Imperative
Film is a subset of the fine arts distribution typically placed within the "visual" component of other fine arts. As in broader society, there is a distinction between the notion of "film" as art and the more general category of "movies" - in quiz bowl, the latter is typically only asked about in the pop culture distribution.
As likely the most popular art form to be asked about in quiz bowl, film is often considered the slice of the canon most capable of sustainable expansion. In recent years there have been more side events focused on film than on the rest of the fine art subjects combined.
