Team History
Washington University in St. Louis has been a fairly successful team in the Midwest.
2008-2009
In the 2008-2009 season, WUAT qualified for the 2009 NAQT ICT by virtue of being an NAQT SCT host. The Division I team went 6-7 to place 20th of 32 teams, while the Division II team went 9-4 to tie for 10th of the 31 teams which actually attended the tournament. Division I player Gordon Arsenoff was a tournament All-Star, coming in sixth overall with 52.83 PP20TH. [1]
2009-2010
The Washington University Academic Team is being led by John Ahlfield in the 2009-2010 season.
The WUSTL team's first tournament of the 2009-2010 season was the Illinois mirror of Early Fall Tournament 4. The B team went 4-8, finishing 16th of 24, while A team went 3-9, finishing 18th. [2] The team did better at ACF Fall 2009 hosted by Missouri, taking 2nd and winning the Division II and Undergraduate championships. [3] A WUSTL house team also took first at GIT XIV. [4]
Tournament Hosting
WUSTL prides itself on its track record of excellence at hosting tournaments at various levels.
High School
Washington University runs WUHSAC, a PACE NSC qualifier, every spring semester using house-written questions.
College
National Tournaments
As a centrally-located school, Washington University has repeatedly hosted both national and regional tournaments. WUSTL was chosen by NAQT to host its ICT in 2001, 2004, and 2008, much to the joy of quizbowl fans who didn't want to go to the middle of nowhere again. It was also the host for the 2009 ACF Nationals, though the tournament was beset by logistical difficulties. FOGHAT 2008 also took place at WUSTL on Sunday, November 2nd, the day immediately after GIT.
GIT
WUSTL annually hosts the Gateway Invitational Tournament in late Fall. The tournament was previous run as a packet submission event, before becoming an NAQT Invitational Series tournament for college teams. The 2009 iteration of GIT was a mirror of Valencia Community College's Delta Burke novice tournament.
OCT
An on-campus intramural tournament has been held each of the past 31 years. Until 2008, this was a CBI Campus Tournament, but after the collapse of CBI, it was written as a house-written event in 2008 which was mirrored by Carnegie Mellon. For the 2009-2010 season, the tournament will be hosted on Intramural questions provided by NAQT.
WUSTL and College Bowl
WUSTL was noteworthy for continuing to play College Bowl until its demise despite losing the 1980 NCT for questionable reasons.
