The Missouri Quizbowl Alliance hosted the 2012 NAQT Missouri Qualifier on March 3, 2012 at the University of Missouri-Columbia under the direction of Jeffrey Hill and Matt Chadbourne. Thirty-two teams from nineteen schools participated, including five schools eligible for the small school title. Ladue A went undefeated to win the tournament, with Savannah A placing second. Pilot Grove took home the small school title, finishing ninth overall.

Teams marked with * were eligible for the small school title

Format

The tournament used NAQT IS-115 with untimed NAQT rules. The thirty-two teams were divided into four pools of 8 teams each, and each played a round robin. The top 2 teams in each pool remained in contention for the championship, and were divided into 2 equal pools of 4. The third place teams in each pool advanced to consolation 3, the fourth teams in each to consolation 4, and so on, resulting in 8 playoff brackets of 4 teams each. Each bracket played a round robin. Following the playoffs, the top 2 teams in each championship bracket advanced to a crossover superplayoff.

Results

Following the playoffs, the championship bracket results were:

Championship A

  • 1. Ladue A, 3-0, 491.7 ppg
  • 2. Savannah A, 2-1, 221.7 ppg
  • 3. Rock Bridge A, 1-2, 160 ppg
  • 4. Ladue B, 0-3, 185 ppg

Championship B

  • 1. Helias A, 3-0, 271.7 ppg
  • 2. NKC A, 1-2, 251.7 ppg
  • 3. Oakville, 1-2, 223.3 ppg
  • 4. Hickman A, 1-2, 190 ppg

The final superplayoff standings were:

  • 1. Ladue A, 3-0, 466.7 ppg
  • 2. Savannah A, 2-1, 310 ppg
  • 3. Helias A, 1-2, 233.3 ppg
  • 4. NKC A, 0-3, 161.7 ppg

Ladue A was to be advantaged in a final against Savannah A, but Savannah decided to forfeit the final, so Ladue A was declared the champion of the fifth annual NAQT Missouri Qualifier and Savannah A second. Helias A was third and NKC A was fourth. These four teams, along with Oakville and Rock Bridge A, qualified for HSNCT and NSC. Since the tournament was platinum-certified by PACE, Hickman A and Ladue B qualified for NSC as well.

Pilot Grove went 3-0 in Consolation 3, finishing in 9th, while the next small school, Elsberry, was in Consolation 5 and finished tied for 18th. Since the teams were more than 4 places apart in the final standings, Pilot Grove was awarded the small school title outright, qualifying once again for HSNCT.

Max Schindler of Ladue was the top scorer with an average of 102.86 points per game in the preliminary rounds and 97.50 points per game overall.
