John John Groger is a player for WUSTL and former player for Columbia and the Miami Valley School. His brother, William, also played for Miami Valley. The duo was notable for repeatedly breaking the Hoppes-Mikanowski limit. He was nominated by the National Quizbowl Awards for ninth grade player of the year in 2017 and was voted the top high school player in the country in the 2020 Groger Ranks player poll.[1] He is also a founder of GrogerRanks, which succeeded Fred Morlan's HSQBRank as the premier ranking of high school quizbowl teams.[2]
Career
Middle school
John John consistently played with his brother William, captaining the team that won the first two iterations Ohio Middle School State Championship. The brothers would place t-8th at the 2015 MSNCT and 5th in 2016. John John was the third place tournament all-star at the 2016 MSNCT.
High school
John John began playing on the high school team at local events beginning in seventh grade, typically with his brother.
In 2016, John John led Miami Valley in the newly-inaugurated Charter-and-Private division to 2nd at the 2017 SSNCT, where he was the third-place all-star.
He was the first-place freshman rising star award at the 2017 HSNCT and the tenth place all-star at the 2018 HSNCT, at which Miami Valley placed t-20. He was on the Miami Valley team that placed 34th at the 2018 NSC and won the JV title.
John John placed 3rd in the 2017 JV National History Bee. In 2018, he placed 11th in National History Bowl playing solo and attended the 2018 International History Olympiad, where he earned gold in the Ancient History and History of STEM bees as part of the 4th place Ohio team.
He was on the 20th place Ohio B team at the 2017 NASAT, as well as the 3rd place Ohio A in 2018.
College
In his freshman year, John John was on the Columbia team that tied for 5th in 2021 ICT DII. He was also the 6th highest overall scorer of Division II. His brother William joined him at Columbia the following year. John John continued playing and was on the A Team in 2023 ICT and 2024 ICT, with the Columbia coming in 9th in the latter. John John was also the Club President of Columbia in the 2023-24 school year.
In the 2024-25 year he entered the Washington University in St. Louis. He was part of the team that came in 8th in 2025 ICT DI. He competed on the B team in 2025 ACF Nationals, where he notably defeated Florida by himself when the rest of the team had been locked in their hotel room.
