Gunpei Yokoi Memorial Open
The Gunpei Yokoi Memorial Open (or just Gunpei Yokoi) was a quizbowl side event held following the VCU Open on Saturday, August 16, 2008, at Virginia Commonwealth University. The tournament was hosted in honor of the late Nintendo video game designer of the same name.
Distribution
As with most side events, the distribution of the tournament was specialized and included:
- 25% Meta (i.e., tossups on things related to quizbowl)
- 25% European history
- 25% Visual fine arts
- 25% Video games
The tournament was tossups-only and included both 15-point powers and 20-point super-powers.[1]
Writers
The tournament was head written by Mike Bentley, with contributions from Chris Carter and Bruce Arthur.[2]
Results
Jonathan Magin's team, consisting of Magin, Carsten Gehring, and Brice Russ, defeated Ted Gioia's team, consisting of Gioia, Jeremy Eaton, Keith Jamieson, and George Berry, in the final.[3] Magin led the tournament in scoring, earning 107.50 PPG with the most amount of superpowers, powers, and conversions.[4]
Legacy
Gunpei Yokoi inspired the creation of Quinn James' Chad C. Mulligan Open, initially intended to be run at Mike Bentley's GUERILLA II in December 19, 2009.[5] After James announced he did not have it ready for GUERILLA II, there is no evidence it was ever run. Nor, in fact, was GUERILLA II, which was officially cancelled on November 29, 2009.[6]
