The Georgia Institute of Technology is a public university located in Atlanta, Georgia. Their quizbowl team has competed regularly since the formation of college quizbowl in the early 1970s, and almost certainly holds the record for most consecutive academic years of fielding a team in at least one intercollegiate academic quizbowl event, having done so since at least 1975.
Georgia Tech played Ripon College on November 30, 1963 on the GE College Bowl program and lost 130-115. Georgia Tech led 120-80 with 90 seconds to go but could only manage an interrupt while Ripon got 2 tossups and some bonus points to close to 115-100. Ripon got the last tossup, then the bonus question, which was an octopus has 8 legs but what similar creature has 10 legs. The answer of squid put Ripon ahead at the end of the game. Georgia Tech did well on the toss ups but only accumulated 30 points on bonuses. Georgia Tech was led by Edwardo Mitrani with 55 points. Other players included Paul Bandow with 30 points, John Barwick with 20 points, and Mitch Barlow with 10 points. The alternate was Ed Patterson. Georgia Tech was coached by English professor Dr. James Young.
Georgia Tech played a series of exhibition games with Agnes Scott in 1964.
Georgia Tech next played in the 1974 Southeastern Invitational held at Georgia Southern February 15-16. Georgia Tech tied with Georgia Southern for second place behind the winning Berry team. Georgia Tech finished 6-2, losing to Berry A and Austin Peay. The Georgia Tech team consisted of captain Garry Williamson, Hilli Gastfriend, Jeff Kipnis, Jan Koenig, and alternate Ray Campbell. Jeff Kipnis led the Georgia Tech team with 26 tossups, followed by Hilli Gastfriend with 17, Garry Williamson with 15, Jan Koenig with 7, and Ray Campbell with 2. Georgia Tech was coached by Dean of Students James Dull.
The 1975 Southeastern Invitational held at Berry College on February 28 - March 1 was the first tournament for legendary Georgia Tech coach Robert Meredith. Dr. Meredith's team won the tournament, the first of his record 8 championships at this tournament. Jeff Kipnis was captain for the Georgia Tech team.
As the winner of the 1975 Southeastern Invitational, Georgia Tech hosted the 1976 tournament on February 27-28. Georgia Tech finished tied for third.
